U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey believes it’s time for the anonymous author to step forward.

Days after a New York Times op-ed detailed an internal resistance against President Donald Trump, Veasey issued a call to the unnamed writer.

“This anonymous source has exposed the Trump Administration for what we knew it was — deceitful, spiteful, and entirely dysfunctional,” Veasey, D-Fort Worth, said in a statement. “They have also exposed the president as a fraud — incompetent and unable to emotionally handle the difficulties and challenges of running our country.

This comes as top Republicans issue denials that they were the senior White House official whom called Trump “impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective.”

The Star-Telegram asked members of Congress who represent Tarrant County to weigh in on the NYT op-ed this week. Only two responded: Veasey and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

The op-ed stated that some senior White House employees “are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations” because “the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.”

On Friday, Trump — who has said the opinion piece is “a very unfair thing” — asked the Justice Department to look into who wrote the article for security reasons.

The White House also is believed to be reviewing a list of those who could have written it.

“I’ll tell you, when somebody writes and you can’t discredit, because you have no idea who they are, usually you’ll find out it’s a background that was bad,” Trump has said. “It might not be a Republican, it may not be a conservative. It may be a deep state person that’s been there a long time.”

Dozens of administration officials — including former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Vice President Mike Pence, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders — have denied writing the op-ed.

Cruz reaction

In response to the Star-Telegram’s request, Cruz’s staff sent a link showing an interview where the senator addressed the issue with Fox News host Sean Hannity.

“At one level, this is nothing new,” Cruz said in the interview. “With every Republican administration, there are Democrats that are burrowed within the administration that have fought against good and positive policy for the country.

“At another level, it has been much much worse under the Trump administration. We’ve seen the deep state. We’ve seen Democrats coming out of the Obama administration deeply politicized, who are fighting the president on every front.”

Trump recently announced he will head to Texas in October to hold a “major rally” for Cruz in “the biggest stadium in Texas we can find.”

The rally is to help the first-term senator in his tight re-election bid against Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso.

No details have been released on when or where that rally will be held, although Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage has noted the biggest venue in Texas is the speedway.

Changing times

Trump and Cruz were fierce adversaries during the 2016 presidential campaign, often insulting each other.

Trump gave Cruz the nickname of “Lying’ Ted.”

Critics have raised money to put one of his tweets about Cruz on a billboard that will travel around the state. It reads: “Why would the people of Texas support Ted Cruz when he has accomplished absolutely nothing for them. He is another all talk, no action pol!”

Cruz, who called Trump a “sniveling coward,” chose to not endorse Trump during his speech at the Republican National convention, instead urging people to vote their conscience.

This week, he talked about the victories the country has seen since Trump took office, such as tax cuts, regulatory reform, the appointment of judges and the repeal of “the Obamacare individual mandate.”

“There are people throughout the administration, burrowed in, that are fighting against all of that,” Cruz said. “But the American people are seeing the results of (Trump’s) victories.”
